Fathers of Independence exhibit at Fujen University

This year Poland celebrates 100th anniversary of restoring independence after 123 years of being partitioned and ruled by three empires of the time: Russia, Prussia (Germany) and Austro-Hungary. With the end of World War I and the border changes, Poland reappeared on the map of Europe.

Steve McCurry at MOCA

Last week Zosia and I went to see a wonderful photo exhibition of one of the greatest photographers, Steve McCurry. Maybe you don't know his name, but most likely you have seen his photos in National Geographic or other magazines.

Smurfs in Taipei 藍色小精靈

- How did you like like the exhibit? - I asked my 7-year-old. - A lot! - was her answer. - What did you like the most? - EVERYTHING! I think that pretty much sums up the exhibit that is happening right now in Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall 中正紀念堂. Ania has watched the Smurf cartoons and has read the books. Unfortunately she was too small to watch the Smurf movies when they were in the cinemas. Smurf with Pearl Milk Tea  Smurf with chopsticks There is even a large playroom with a few fun games for the kids: Here kids can watch Smurf cartoons:  There is also an interesting part of the exhibit about the French creator of the cute blue creatures, Peyo. Unfortunately I was so preoccupied with explaining everything to Ania, that I forgot to take photos. So if you have a Smurf fan be sure to drop by the exhibit before April 15th, 2018.

Egyptian Mummies Exhibit at Palace Museum

Every now and then an interesting exhibition comes to town. This time it's the Egyptian Mummies From the British Museum - Exploring Ancient Lives. The exhibition has been on since the middle of November and is closing soon, Feb.18. Last Friday I finally took the kids to see the exhibit. The downside of exhibitions from abroad is that they are very crowded, it's hard to believe that so many people would be interested in the ancient Egypt. It was quite obvious that most of the people were learning about mummies for the first time, it was taking them for ever to read all the information on the walls. The whole exhibit is divided into six parts, each one showcasing a different individual who lived in ancient Egypt from about 900 BC to about AD 180. First we saw Nestwedjat, a wealthy married woman from Thebes. Next was Tamut, a Chantress of Amun and a daughter of a priest of the god Amun, king of  gods. Third was Irthorru, a priest from Akhmim who was serving several g...

History of photography in Taiwan

A new exhibition has just started at the National Museum of History in Taipei - Then and Now: Modern and Contemporary Photography in Taiwan . Photography is something that most members of our family are interested in so when I've found out about the exhibit we had to visit it. The exhibit is not large, but very interesting. It's divided into three parts:  - Images of the South: Taiwanese Photography during the Japanese Rule - Are Images Real? Photographic Works as Social Dialogue - Remembering Southern Taipei: Changes of Architecture and Landscape   The history of photography in Taiwan starts in 19th century when it was the means for foreigners to document the life in Taiwan. Later, under the Japanese rule, first photo studios were opened, journalists and official photographers started taking photos of the everyday life and the development of Taiwan. After 1945 the theme of photography was the social change happening in Taiwan under the new gove...

An amazing art exhibition by Ai

Last Sunday we visited a very interesting art exhibition by one of our young friends, Ai 艾摩爾. Ai is also a homeschooler, a very talented homeschooler I must say. He's a wonderful young man, full of passion and love for art and the world. His art takes many different forms - all kinds of painting, woodwork, visual media, poetry, prose etc. He is also a great organiser - last year he was one of organisers of the first art exhibit of young homeschooling artists. This solo art exhibition, "0% Confession" ("告黑“) is also all his work, not only the artwork, but the venue is also designed (and remodeled) by him and his friends. Ai has taken us through his artistic journey in preparation for this exhibition. There is a meaningful story behind each and every piece of art he has created. If you are in Taipei in the next few days do try to visit this exhibition, it's really worth it!

DreamWorks Animation exhibition

I haven't taken kids to an interesting exhibition for a while now. I don't check the museums and galleries for new exhibits very often so it does happen that we miss some interesting things. Fortunately this time I found out about the DreamWorks Animation exhibition in the National Taiwan Science Education Center 國立台灣科學教育館 before it closed. The exhibition was larger and more interesting than I expected. It took us through the whole process of creating an animation film. From the idea, through the free drawings of each scene, to the final film with music.  Only after visiting this exhibition I realised how few films I have seen. And Ania hasn't seen a single one! Now all three of us want to watch more animations!
