Taking bullet train from Toyama Airport

For the first time in almost 10 years I had to take public transportation in Japan (used to drive or be picked up from everywhere). This time there was no one waiting for us at the airport and we (that is Jaś, Ania and I and our luggage)  had to figure out our way to Itoigawa.

After arriving at Toyama airport we bought our airport shuttle bus tickets at the vending machine inside the airport terminal. There are different ticket prices for adults and children.
The shuttle bus stop is right outside the terminal and there is always very helpful security personnel ready to help you in case you have any questions.

Remember to line up for the bus! Do not jump the queue!
After the bus arrives and the driver opens the luggage storage, you should place your bags and gear there as there is not mush space in the bus. Take your seat and get ready for 20-25 minutes ride to the Toyama Station.
Before leaving the bus drop your ticket in the box next to the driver and remember to take all your belongings.

The ticket office for the bullet train Shinkansen is on the right from the entrance. There you can buy tickets for the bullet train - Shinkansen Hokuriku line. Remember that Itoigawa is in the same direction as Tokyo. If you have a lot of luggage do mention that so you will get seats at the end of the carriage where there is more place for bags.

If you still have time before the train departure, you can rest in the waiting area which is heated in the winter.

To enter the Shinkansen part of the train station you need to swipe the ticket to go through the gate.
On the platform you should find the place where your carriage will top and line up there.

The train only stops here briefly so you have to be ready to move your luggage fast.

Store your luggage and take your seat. The trip is less than 30 minutes long so ... don't fall asleep.

In Itoigawa (or any other station that you will be alighting) you will have to go through the gate again. If you would like to keep your ticket, you need to exit through the gate for the disabled and tell that to the ticket collector so he will stamp your ticket as you exit.

If you are travelling further to Hakuba then you would need to change train for a normal JR slow train. But the trip would be a bit complicated if you have luggage as because of different train tracks the trains on that short stretch need to be changed... I have not tried doing that with kids and all the bags.

This season 2018/19 there is a new, easy option for getting from TOY to Hakuba - a bus run by Hakuba Sanroku Tours - https://www.hakuba1.com/english/package/2019

Animals Classification Lapbook

Last week Jaś has been very busy working on the animal classification lapbook. Lately it's been very difficult to get him interested in doing any kind of project, but to my surprise he has finished this lapbook in just a few days! I am really proud of him. I used a ready lapbook template from the wonderful Homeschool Share website, but I asked Jaś to writ all the information in his own handwriting instead of just printing the prepared text. Here are the photos of his lapbook: Jaś adding the finishing touches to the lapbook cover: Lapbook cover: The inside of the lapbook: Inside 'Classifying Living Things ': Animals with and without backbones are called:  Inside 'What are the four main Invertebrate Classes?': Inside 'What are the five Vertebrate Classes?': Mollusk characteristics Annelid characteristics: Arthropod characteristics: Echinoderm characteristics: Fish characteristics: Reptile char...

Fryderyk Chopin - lapbook
